In fourth grade, higher level thinking skills replace the learning to read philosophy found in the younger grades. It is truly a "Florida Experience" since much of the social studies and science curriculum is devoted to the study of Florida's rich history, dynamic present, and exciting future.

Our students are able to get out of the classroom frequently to experience this wonderful state God has given us. We take many interesting field trips, including outings to the Olustee Battle Reenactment in February and St. Augustine for an overnight trip in May.

Welcome to the 2005-2006 School Year

2007-2008 School Year

Things “ancient” are not at the forefront in the minds of fourth graders. Instead, they are very much in the “now.” We must always remember that we are all people of God for whom Jesus lived the perfect life and for whom He died on the cross, suffering the punishment for our sins. We must also remember He rose, conquering death and giving the blessings of a new life in Him!

We met Abraham and Lot, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers and Moses in our Religion units. Then we studied Jesus, the Savior first promised in the Garden of Eden and the miracle worker. In our current unit, we are learning about Paul: a man on a mission.

4th grade is centered on the study of our great state of Florida. In Social Studies, we began with a look at the geography of our state, learning about the land, climate, physical regions, natural resources, and the people and places that make Florida great. Then, we learned about the Europeans who came to Florida and the Native Americans who faced the challenge to accept European ways or fight. Our next unit concentrated on the control of Florida passing from Spain to Great Britain and back to Spain before it became a territory of the United States in 1822. Florida is one of fifty states but its road to statehood was unusual. Florida did not become a state until 1845. Shortly after that, the people of our new state joined other Southern states in a war against Northern states. We are currently studying this war and the reconstruction period that followed it.

The first science unit was weather and included learning how to chart hurricanes. We studied clouds, weather patterns, and how to stay safe during violent storms. Our Inventions unit culminated on the evening of December 10th with our Christmas Holiday Extravaganza and the chance to explain our inventions to friends and family members. It was a great success and the inventions were incredible!!! We studied endangered Florida animals online and wrote our research papers on computers. We are currently studying water and its importance to Florida using many different resources such as The Great Water Odyssey and The Florida Times-Union’s water education supplement.

The class is reading from short stories under the theme, “Side by Side.”

In math, we are studying plane figures.

Our room parents are Renee Bailey, Jennifer Hall, and Shalene Alesch
